Nick Spano, a lobbyist and former GOP state senator from Yonkers, will be sentenced this afternoon for tax evasion. He will appear before U.S. District Judge Cathy Seibell.
Spano, who served in Albany for 30 years, was arraigned in February on a federal complaint alleging he did not pay $53,000 in income taxes during an eight-year period. The complaint included charges that he used his political office to obtain thousands of dollars in income, but he admitted only to tax evasion. The Journal News published a story in advance of the sentencing.
Federal sentencing guidelines call for a prison term of between 12 and 18 months.
Spano lost the 2006 election to Andrea Stewart-Cousins, a Yonkers Democrat.
