Suburban legislators who led the charge to fight the MTA payroll tax may rue the day, if the tax gets upheld, and the regional transportation agency seeks alternative funding streams.
That’s the analysis of Charles Brecher and Rahul Jain from the Citizens Budget Committee in a blog post today. Suburban companies provide $459 million in payroll taxes as part of $1.4 billion in payroll taxes paid through the levy.
They predict a 32 percent increase in Metro-North fares if the lower court ruling is upheld by NY appellate courts, and a replacement funding stream is not found.
