The White House will ask Congress to approve $60.4 billion in emergency funding to help New York, New Jersey and neighboring states recover from Superstorm Sandy, according to sources.

[1]The request will be sent to Congress later today, the sources told Gannett’s Washington and Albany bureaus.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been talking with the White House throughout the day, and he expected to hold a news conference with Sen. Charles Schumer later today to applaud the plan.

The governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have said they will need a total $82 billion to rebuild.

Of that amount, $79 billion would go to New York and New Jersey, Brian Tumulty of Gannett’s Washington Bureau reports.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency currently has more than $4 billion in its Disaster Relief Fund, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate recently told members of a Senate subcommittee.
Fugate said his agency has received more than 490,000 applications for assistance from victims of Sandy and has provided more than $1 billion in disaster aid.
