Property owners in the Lower Hudson Valley will receive letters in September to re-register to receive the School Tax Relief exemption, according to a story from Gannett’s Albany bureau.
The letters, which will provide instructions on retaining STAR exemptions on property taxes, will begin arriving in Putnam and Rockland, said officials with the state Dept. of Taxation and Finance. Westchester residents will begin receiving the letters by Sept. 30.
The state is requiring property owners to re-apply for the STAR program – which provides a partial exemption from school taxes on a primary residence for some homeowners and an enhanced benefit for seniors – to crack down on fraud and abuse. Homeowners, in some instances, have been claiming the exemption on multiple properties.
The new system will require taxpayers to apply for the program online or by phone by the end of this year. Individuals must verify their salary, Social Security number and their primary residence.
