In mid-August, I was barred from touring Westchester’s vacant WestHELP apartments by Greenburgh Town Attorney Tim Lewis, who said showing images of the apartment interiors could politicize the issue in favor of Supervisor candidate Bob Bernstein, who wants to win the Democratic nomination over incumbent Paul Feiner in the Sept. 10 Democratic primary.
But on Tuesday, when I asked Feiner about the media blackout at the Hastings-on-Hudson candidate debate, he announced he would give Tax Watch access to the apartments, which the town has kept vacant for 23 months. I toured several units on Thursday afternoon with my longtime colleague, photographer Frank Becerra.
On Sunday, I’ll report on the mess I found – units littered with trash, stained mattresses and old furniture. Mold was pervasive throughout one unit, covering the walls and ceilings throughout. I left after five minutes, with a headache from the air I’d breathed.
