Beginning in a matter of weeks, New Yorkers will begin signing up for New York’s health-care exchanged as required under the federal Affordable Care Act.
Even as the enrollment period is set to begin on Oct. 1 there is palpable confusion over what the law does, what its impact will be on business and citizens and how much it will ultimately costs companies and taxpayers.
But many people have their minds made up believing the law – which is meant to provide insurance to the uninsured and control health care costs – strip them of their rights, penalize them unfairly and lead to the loss of insurance and a decline in quality of care. The disagreements have caused a showdown in Congress, where some members are pushing to defund the new law and others warning such a move could result in a government shutdown.
