More than 122 million tax returns were e-filed this year, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Of those, more than 45.2 million were from taxpayers who prepared and e-filed their own IRS returns on home computers, up 4.6 percent from the 43.2 million who did so in 2012.
The number of e-filed returns from tax professionals increased slightly to more than 77 million, the IRS said.
Other highlights from the year:
— The IRS issued more than 109 million refunds totaling nearly $300 billion in 2013.
— Roughly 77 percent of refund recipients chose to receive their refunds through direct deposit.
— The IRS website has been accessed more than 430 million times so far in 2013, up almost 24 percent compared to the same time last year.
