The Westchester Democratic Committee is trying to poke holes in Republican County Executive Rob Astorino’s run for governor with an organized communications campaign that started with criticism of his time spent outside the county campaigning.
Now the committee is challenging Astorino’s claim that he lowered the Westchester tax levy more than any other county in the state. They’re calling their campaign the “Astorino Truth Squad.”
Onondaga County apparently lowered its levy much more drastically than Westchester. Time Warner Cable News reported: “In fact, while Astorino did reduce the tax levy in Westchester by $12 million, Onondaga County cut its tax levy by more than $38 million. So if his claim is in error? Astorino declared, ‘We’re going in the right direction. That’s the point.'”
Here’s the Democrats’ release:
TRUTH SQUAD: ROB ASTORINO CLAIM THAT HE CUT THE TAX LEVY MORE THAN ANY COUNTY IN THE STATE IS OUTRIGHT FALSE – AND HE GOT CALLED OUT ON IT IN SYRACUSE YESTERDAY **SEE THE VIDEO
Two days into his race for Governor, Rob Astorino is already getting called out for misleading New Yorkers. In an attempt to make voters forget that Westchester County is the highest taxed county, not only in New York, but in the nation, Rob Astorino claimed in his announcement video that he cut the tax levy “more than any other county in the state.” That’s outright false –and he got called out on it in Syracuse yesterday by YNN reporter Bill Carey. See the video here.
Here are the facts: Onondaga County was able to reduce its county tax levy by 22% over a four year period from 2010 to 2014. In contrast, over the same four years, Westchester reduced its tax levy by 2.1% –which was done by the county legislature by overriding Astorino’s veto.
“It didn’t take long for Rob Astorino to get caught doing upstate what he has been doing in Westchester for years: shamelessly misleading voters with falsehoods. If Rob Astorino is willing to put out misleading information about his record on day 1 of his campaign, what else can we expect him to mislead New Yorkers about moving forward?” said Catherine Borgia, Westchester County Legislator. “Those of us in Westchester knew what Rob would do from past experience. That’s why we formed the Truth Squad.”
